Flowers have been essential parts of the many aspects of human activities. For instance, flowers are used in the courtship ritual. Although flowers are used as ornaments for aesthetic purposes, some species of flowers are used in food recipes as well as in medicinal concoctions.
The dahlia flower, for instance, was once used by ancient South American civilizations, particularly the Aztecs, in the treatment of epilepsy. The most interesting flowers to cultivate are the flowers that can offer a wide range of possible breeds. Passifloraceae, commonly called passion flowers, is a family of flowering plants that is relatively easy to cultivate.
This plant family has 530 species classified under 18 genera. They have medicinal value particularly for treating hysteria and nervous tachycardia. These passion flowers ideally grow in exceptionally drained soil such as mountain slopes and roadside rubble in arid areas. You may improve germination of the seeds of these flowers by lightly rubbing sandpaper on one or both sides of the seeds. Soak the seeds in tepid water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in 2-5 mm deep of soil-based compost. Maintain the temperature at 20 degrees Celcius.

Flowers have always been part of human fascination. Flowers are symbols of beauty and affection. Flowers are also used to show sympathy. Flowers are generally used as ornaments, but there are some flowers that are utilized as ingredients in gourmet food.
Some flowers also have medicinal value. For instance, some cultures like the ancient South American civilization of the Aztecs used dahlia flowers to treat epilepsy. Many other types of flowers have historical significance or at least played a part in the development of history.
Tulip is one type of flower that has a long history. For over a thousand years, wild tulips originally grew in Persia. The word tulip is actually thought to be a corruption of the Turkish word for turbans. Tulips had been source of inspiration for Persian poets and Persian artists often used tulips as subjects for their paintings. Hence, Europe considered tulip as the symbol of the Ottoman Empire. Tulip was introduced in Europe through the Venetian trade with Turkey. At around 1610, tulip became a popular ornament among French ladies. Tulip trade was a very lucrative business enterprise in Europe.

There are about 270,000 species of flowers that so far have been documented, but only a handful of these flowers have significance in civilization history. Admittedly, no other flower has more historical significance and popularity than the rose. The rose has been a favorite topic of many writers throughout the centuries, inspiring romance and representing beauty. William Shakespeare once wrote, “A rose by any other name, smells as sweet.” The rose was also the symbol used by one of the most famous family feuds in history, the War of the Roses.
The rose was introduced by the Greeks to the ancient Roman city. Roman streets were strewn with rose petals during public games. On the other hand, the rich Romans maintained huge rose gardens intended for their gravesites. They believed that roses were pleasing to the spirits of the dead.
Roses were widely used for ornamental purposes in Europe during the Roman Empire. On the other hand, early Christians considered the rose as a symbol of paganism. A church authority, Tertullian, even wrote an entire book volume condemning the flower in the year 202 A.D.

It was a thousand years ago when the use of flowers in cooking had begun. From then on many cultures around the globe started incorporating edible flowers into their culinary dishes. A good example of a culinary practice using rose petals come from the Indians. They use the petals in many of their recipes.
But how exactly do flowers taste like? It is first important to distinguish between the edible and non-edible flowers before you go on making your own salad. By the way, salads are an easy way of preparing edible flowers.
Some familiar edible flowers that you can grow in your backyard are basil, carnation, violets, roses, squash blossom, sage, and rosemary among others. Use these flowers sparingly in your recipes. These flowers are not toxic so they are completely safe. They aren't only good for garnishing your dishes, but you can eat them alone or in salads. Some of these flowers have sweet or spicy flavor.
It is important to pick only the fresh ones that are also pesticide-free. Never eat the flowers that come from the flower shop. It is better to eat organic ones so go on and grow them in your own backyard.

Ancient people rely on the healing wonders of herbs in curing health problems. Plants have natural organic chemicals that can be used to treat certain illnesses. Herbalists are the first doctors and pharmacists of ancient societies. Although they may not have the specific knowledge of the chemical compositions of plants, their methods are effective. Herbal remedies were developed based on experience and observation. In fact, some herbal remedies are still use today as alternative medicines.
The South American civilization of the Aztecs, for instance, used herbal remedies to treat common ailments. Dahlia is a flower used by ancient Aztecs to treat epilepsy. A document written in Latin was discovered in 1929. This document described the method of Aztecs in treating epilepsy using dahlia flowers. This document was written just sixty years after Columbus discovered the American continent.
In the 1840’s, French potato crop had been destroyed by a disease. The scientific community in Europe considered dahlia as possible food source. In Europe, dahlia was once used to treat diabetics. Before the discovery of insulin, diabetics were given sugar made from dahlia tubers. Chemicals derived from dahlia flower were also used in clinical tests for liver and kidney functions.

Flowers are the reproductive parts of plants. The formation and union of gametes occur in flowers. Most flowers have both male and female features. However, self-pollination is not the ideal reproduction method of plants. Generally, insects help in the pollination of plants by transferring pollen grains from one flowering plant to another of same species. Human beings, on the other hand, have been purposely breeding plants through cross pollination for centuries.
Flowers are the reproductive parts of plants. Hence, it is an appropriate coincidence that flowers are used in the dating ritual. Flowers are also used in gourmet food preparations as decorations or as main ingredient.
Some flowers are seasonal while some are perennials. Chrysanthemum is an example of a perennial flower. Chrysanthemum is actually a genus of about 30 species in the family Asteraceae. Formerly, this genus included many more species, but the other species had been classified into other genera several decades ago.
Chrysanthemum flowers occur in various forms that can be fashioned into different decorative designs. On the other hand, chrysanthemums are also used in some culinary preparations. The flowers are boiled to make a sweet drink in some parts of Asia.

Flowers, like soft music, invite sweet romantic moods. Flowers have always been symbols of beauty and affection. Incidentally, flowers are actually the reproductive parts of plants. Hence, flowers are very appropriate symbols used in courtship. On the other hand, flowers are also used in more gloomy situations. Flowers have been used for millennia as part of funeral rites. The earliest evidences of the use flowers in burial rites are the fossils of pollen grains and petals in a Neanderthal burial site. Flowers have been associated with procreation and life even before humans invented the written language.
Daisy is one type of flower that has a long history associated with humans. One Celtic legend tells a story of children who died in childbirth. The spirits of these children scattered daisies on the earth to cheer their sorrowing parents. On the other hand, golden hairpins with daisy designs were found in an ancient Minoan palace on the Island of Crete. These hairpins were dated to be more than 4000 years old. Egyptian ceramics are also decorated with daisies. The old English name of daisy was day’s eye, in reference to the way this flower opens and closes with the sun.

Most girls love to receive flowers. Some guys give their beloved a bunch of flowers to express their earnest sweet love. Normally, men prefer to give roses than any other flowers in the flower shop. But some women like roses more, especially if red. However, roses have a colorful background. They were used to express affection, beauty, conflict and politics of famous historical personalities once upon a time.
A garden of roses was first discovered somewhere in Asia, about 5000 years ago. The beauty of the flower was brought to Europe, and from then on, roses became part of many occasions. During the Roman Era, roses were used for celebrations, for medical uses, or for perfume manufacturing.
The "War of the Roses" happened in 15th Century, when the white and red roses were used to symbolize factions fighting to have power over England. Also, the wife of Napoleon, Josephine, was fascinated with roses, too. She worked on her roses collection at Chateau de Malmaison, in 1800.
There are more untold stories of roses in the past. But what we know, roses are famous flowers and will still be part of more stories in the future.

Botanists declare that there are at least 270,000 living species of flowers that have been documented in one way or another. This amazing diversity is perhaps only comparable to the diversity of insects. Flowers and pollinating insects have influenced each other’s evolution. Flowers are considered as the symbols of beauty and affection. Hence, it is not surprising that flowers are used as gifts in romantic dating. The fragrance of flowers is a natural perfume that attracts not only the pollinating insects, but also the human senses. On the other hand, the colors of flowers excite the visual aesthetic sense. Thus, it is not surprising that flowers are common elements in some exquisite interior designs.
On the other hand, there are species of flowers which have historical significance. The flower calendula, for instance, had been used by the Romans as seasoning for meat and salad dishes. Calendula flower is mixed with vinegar for this purpose. The ancient Romans also believed that calendula blossoms in wine can help soothe indigestion. The petals of calendula were used in herbal ointments that cured skin irritations, toothaches, sore eyes, and jaundice.

Not all of us have green thumbs. Most of us, no matter how hard we try, end up with withered or wilted plants. Plants seem to recognize persons who are truly ecologically aware. No, I am not talking about the Taoist or Buddhist ideal about being one with the universe.
A person who is ecologically aware looks at plants not as mere ornaments used as gifts in romantic dates or part of creative interior designs. An ecologically aware person looks at plants as having important roles in the ecological balance and evolution of species. Flowering plants, in particular, have special influence in the evolutionary development of social insects such as the bees.
Plants need three basic resources to survive. First is sunlight, which is very important in the process of photosynthesis. The energy from the ultraviolet rays of sunlight serves as catalyst for the chlorophyll to process nutrients into food. Hence, plants should be placed in areas where they can get ample sunlight. The second resource is carbon dioxide, which is necessary in the manufacture of sugar and carbohydrates. The third important resource is water, which carries the nutrients to plants and maintains structural integrity.

I just love the fresh Coriander leaves with fresh tomatoes. It's a good side dish for nachos and enchiladas. The Coriander plant somewhat reminds me of the Basil plant. The Coriander is an herbal plant that smells so good and it tastes good too. In several northern European countries, the people put Coriander seeds in their breads. In the East, it's used as a condiment and it's added to curry powder.
The Coriander is an annual plant. It has really stiffle-erected stems and it grows from one to three feet in height. It's a slender plant with it has a lot of branches. The Coriander's leaves are rounded or sometimes they're oval in shape. You can distinguish them easier because the leaves are lobed. This herb is a very lovely plant. Its bright green in color and its leaves are very shiny. This herb is abundant in Europe and in Eastern countries. It originated from the East and it was introduced to fascinating Britain by the Roman people. In almost all countries, the Coriander has its own functions. In our house, we eat it and it just makes our food all the more delicious!

Did you know that the name orchid was derived from the Greek word "orchis" which means "testicle"? What a way to name such a beautiful flower. Orchids have the most different kinds of flowers there is. They are characterized by their bilaterally symmetric petals. They also have a column and their pollens are glued together in a mass of waxy pollen on filaments.
Orchids are very lovely to look at. They have different colors and grow on tree trunks or shrubs. Some can also live on rocky soil. As long as there is the mycorrhizae, a fungus that helps them grow, orchids can live. There is no exact number of how many species of orchids there are, but botanists agree that there are more than a hundred thousand of these in the world. They grow mostly in warm tropical climates like in Asia, South America, and Central America. Some orchids are being crossed with other orchids in order to produce hybrids.
Orchids are very complex. They are the result of years of floral evolution. Some orchids imitate the shape of other insects in order to greater their chance of pollination.

Do you love a good serving of pesto sauce on your pasta? Well, I do especially when it's fresh. You need not go to your favorite gourmet restaurants to have a pesto. You can just make it on your own. The pesto sauce's main ingredient is Basil leaves. My mom would always ask me to pick on the fully-grown Basil leaves, planted outside our house. She would then crush the Basil leaves and mix them, along with the other ingredients. Of course, she always uses our reliable blender.
I never knew that we had a Basil plant outside our house until I smelled it one time. Basil leaves have a very aromatic smell. It's a bright-green herbal plant that tastes sweet, savory, sharp, and rich all at the same time. The basil leaf has always been a side dish embellishment in authentic Italian meals. So, if you want to go for Italian food, grow the Basil plant in your backyards. This plant can be easily grown and they spurt fast. For the best Basil plant, you need to place the plant under a full sun-exposure. You need to water it everyday and it needs regular pruning. You'll have al fresco dining everyday with this marvelous herbal plant.

I like flowers that grow in vines because they give an instant shade to your houses. They also give your houses a mysterious and palatial look. These vine flowers make drab house designs look lovely and fresh all the time. That's why I opt for annual flower vines to have different kinds of floral house designs. My first choice is the Morning Glory flower vine. These flowers are very easy to plant and maintain.
The Morning Glory has more than 200 species and all of them are bright and colorful. Usually, the Morning Glory blooms in blue, purple, pink, scarlet, white, and sometimes multi-colored. The flowers are formed like trumpets and the leaves are heart-shaped. The leaves grow from 4 to 5 inches long. The Morning Glory vines grow very fast. Usually, they reach up to 10 feet in height. When the seeds begin to spurt, the vines would immediately grow after a month or two. This flower vine prefers a nice cloudy weather. From dawn to midmorning, this flower vine would blossom and open. They're very dependable when you want to cover your fences, hedges, and even as temporary ground covers.

I just adore and love lilies, don't you just love them? They're very lovely and surprisingly enough, they're very easy to plant and grow. I always thought that beautiful flowers need plenty of our time and effort just to grow. Lilies are different, they are exceptionally easy to plant and they spread on their own. The Day Lilies are specifically very easy to plant. Day Lilies are perfect for home decorations. They're not so hard to find because you can grow them in your yards in a snap. Well, of course you still have to tend them and water them but it doesn't take too much fuss.
All you need to grow Day Lilies are just the basic planting requirements. First thing you'll need is a well-drained sandy loam. The soil pH must be neutral and the soil water should just be moist. The soil must tolerate all dry conditions because Day Lilies need full sun exposure. See, they're not so hard to provide for! Some flowers need shade or a special type of soil. But, the Day Lilies only need a good sun bath and voila! They'll grow in no time. You should expect the Day Lily to grow up to 4 feet in height.
Usually, the Day Lilies bloom in shades of yellow, pink, and orange. The Day Lilies would blossom in the spring season to late summer. These flowers propagate easily so you won't have any problems spreading them in your yards. You just have to trim them every now and then for a perfect Day Lilies-landscape.

Austria has edelweiss, Netherlands has tulip, Philippines has sampaguita, and Japan has chrysanthemum.
Flowers are not only symbols of love or emotions but are also the pride of different countries. Some countries are known because of their national flower. Although edelweiss, tulip, sampaguita and chrysanthemum can also be produced in other countries, the flower that is associated with a country helps in the flowers' promotion and the country itself.
Flowers are chosen as national symbols by the qualities they possess which the country is proud to have, too. They are also given this status if they are most popular among other countries. National flowers give a feel of patriotism to its citizens.
This is true in the example of the song which the Austrian leader, father of the children and Maria's love interest, sang in the "Sound of Music" movie. "Edelweiss, edelweiss..." as the song goes which is offered to the love of country. Sampaguita on the other hand, is used as necklace to give as gifts to tourists who visit the Philippines. It is also the most popular flower to hang and offer on religious statues.
All these traits make the flower the most sentimental symbol there is. Even for love of a woman or love for a country, flowers are best used.

My most favorite flower color is yellow. I think that yellow flowers look very cheerful and refreshing to the tired eyes. They also look good in any backyard, in any frontyard, and in any house color, don't you think? Yellow automatically reminds me of the sun's bright glow. That's why yellow flowers never look drab and lifeless. No matter where you plant them, they would make the area look alive and pleasant.
Yellow Bells and Daisies aren't the only flowers that are of the color yellow. The Golden Marguerite is another form of yellow flower. Scientifically, the Golden Marguerite is the Anthemis Tinctoria. This fascinating flower is usually the type of flowers that you should regularly cut and weed out. This is because they grow and spread rapidly around their area. The Golden Marguerite usually grows and blooms from midsummer to frost season. It's best planted in hot and dry places. The Golden Marguerite is also good for masses. This means that it's the type of flower which is best planted in large amounts in a scattered formation. But, if your yard has a shade, you can still plant this flower because it can also grow in partially-shaded areas. The Golden Marguerite is one of those flowers that is self-reliant. They can actually cover the whole earth's surface if you don't cut them or weed them out! They're basically the type which scatters themselves anywhere they want to. It's best for a nice yard landscape effect in your gardens.

Perennials are very lovely when they bloom throughout the season. So, how can you make sure that they stay vibrant and fresh? Besides watering them and trimming them regularly, you also need to make sure that they are properly fertilized. The soil has to be moist enough and warm enough for the perennials. You also have to protect them from pests and such. Another thing about perennials is that you have to cut the roots when they grow, so they won't overcrowd the soil.
What perennial flowers need the most is hand weeding. You have to make it a point to control the weeding. You can also use herbicides. Herbicides avoid shallow-root damages. Of course, you always have to do a soil test to know the proper measurement of fertilization. Putting in too much fertilizer can actually damage the flower. Everything has to be just right. By spring, your perennials are bound to fully bloom. This is because spring has the nicest weather condition. When you see the young leaves spurt out from the soil, never touch them with fertilizer. This would only do more harm than good to the young leaves.
Also, never be impatient when planting perennial flowers. Newly planted perennial flowers do not usually bloom the first year. You have to wait for several years for them to bloom. Lastly, you have to remove the old leaves and flowers. This would encourage new flowers and leaves to bloom. Do all of these and you'd be sure to have fabulously healthy and beautiful perennial flowers.

I like taking care of annual flowers because they're seasonal. It's like growing babies over and over again. I never get tired of planting them, much less growing them. But, sometimes I tend to overdo watering them so the plant dies. The best way to maintain an annual flower is to know how to properly water them. This is a big factor not just for annuals, but for all kinds of flowers as well.
You see, it doesn't mean that if you regularly water the plants that they'd grow healthy and vibrant. Too much watering can actually make the flowers drab and lifeless. The best way to water your annual flowers is to water them an inch every week. Another very important thing is to provide your flowers with enough sunlight exposure. You would have to strategically place them on a spot which exposes them to the sun. Your measurement should just be an inch so the flowers would absorb the water efficiently.
If it doesn't rain, then you would have to water "deeply." This allows the roots for a quick and healthy growth. You have to keep the "foliage" dry when you water your flowers. If you're using the traditional sprinkler, you have to make sure that you water in the morning. That way, the foliage will be dry by night time. You just have to keep the flowers moist, and remember that you don't have to water them everyday to keep them alive.

Mowing the lawn is one of the major causes of arguments between husbands and wives, next to taking out the trash. Again, compromise is the key to solve this problem.
The lawn is the first thing people notice when they see your house. A nice lawn may somehow indicate that the family knows how to groom their house and themselves. A nicely cut grass in the yard is very inviting. It can be a place for the family to relax and spend the afternoon on warm summer night and cold autumn ones. During winter, lawn mowing is not a problem.
The key in maintaining a nice looking lawn is to water it regularly. Be sure to have sprinklers so the grass will look fresh and healthy.
Lawn-mowing would be the problem. Hire a high-school kid to do this for you or give yourself a little exercise and do it by yourself. Just keep in mind that you will not only be pleasing your lovely wife but you will also be pleasing yourself with the clean look of your front lawn. The neighbors will also admire your clean lawn and you will be able to invite more friends for some simple front yard party.
