People with allergies are advised to take short – and long-term precautions to control allergy symptoms as they start to work on their lawns and gardens. There are over 35 million people in the United States affected by seasonal allergic rhinitis or " hay fever." It is caused by substances called allergens, airborne pollens and mold spores that commonly trigger symptoms during the spring, summer and fall. During these times, people with such allergy experience symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, and itchy eyes, roof of the mouth, throat, nose, and ears.
To play it safe, avoid large areas of turf and use natural plants. Native plants are best for people with allergies because they require little effort, withstand the extreme climate changes in various regions of the country and do not need fertilizers, water or pesticides. Every plants produce a unique level of pollen, therefore producing different levels of allergic reactions. Plants that cause allergies usually have flowers that are small and insignificant looking and have no color or attracting nectar, and they are usually wind pollinated and produce great amounts of pollen that is buoyant and without much surface ornamentation. Plants with bright, showy flowers seldom have airborne pollen which are large and pollinated by insects, so they are best for allergic people.

Lilacs (Syringa) are a genus of about 20 species of flowering plants in the family Oleaceae (olive). The flowers are produced every spring, each flower about 1 cm diameter, white, pale pink or more generally purple, with four petals. The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance, but only last for a couple of weeks. Lilacs originated from Europe and Asia, but Rochester, New York is undoubtedly the Lilac Capital of the World with its annual, two week long Lilac Festival featuring over 500 varieties of lilacs and more than 1200 lilac bushes in the parks' 155 acres.
Lilacs are popular shrubs in parks and gardens throughout the temperate zone, and are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species. Lilac bushes can be prone to powdery mildew disease caused by poor air circulation. They only bloom for only a very brief couple weeks in the spring. But if you want to prolong their presence in your yard, grow a variety of Lilacs, including, early, mid and late varieties. With variety and luck you may be able to see Lilacs in bloom in your yard for up to six weeks, and weather will have a lot to do with how long your blooms last. When the buds begin to open, pray for a cool dry spell. And once the blooms are over, you still have a nice shade bush, but you have to wait for up to fifty more weeks to see them again.

When all your beautiful flowers have bloomed, you may want to gather them all and place them in a vase to display by your coffee table in the living room for your guests to adore, or to add more life into your bedroom. But how creative are you in arranging those flower in a container?
Select the colors you want to work with, whether yellow, red and blue for a cheery spring arrangement, or burgundy, brown and orange for a rich fall one. Then decide whether you want to work with fresh flowers, dry flowers or artificial flowers. Fresh flowers are available through any florist and from outside if you live in the country or have your own garden, and dry and fake ones at local craft stores. You can cover the base with foliage so the floral sponge can't be seen. Use short pieces of greenery, preferably bushy so you don't have to use too much of it and you'll still have room for the flowers.
Place the large flowers at the bottom. Be sure to work with one flower at a time. Think of a figure you like for the arrangement, such as a pyramid, or a ball shape, and shorten the stems accordingly to give the arrangement its professional and creative look.

The Clover (Trifolium) is a genus of about 300 species of plants in the pea family Fabaceae and are found chiefly in northern temperate regions, but also, like many other north temperate genera, on mountains in the tropics. These plants are small annual or perennial herbs with trifoliate (rarely 5- or 7-foliate) leaves, with stipules adnate to the leaf-stalk, and heads or dense spikes of small red, purple, white, or rarely yellow flowers.
Either sown alone or in mixture with rye-grass, the clover has for a long time formed a staple crop for soiling, for several reasons: it grows freely, shooting up again after repeated mowings; it produces an abundant crop; it is palatable to and nutritious for livestock; and it grows in a great range of soils and climates.
Most clovers come with three leaves, and having four leaves is a rarity, which lead to the belief that finding a four-leaf clover means good luck. According to legend, the first leaf is for hope, the second leaf is for faith, the third leaf is for love, and the fourth leaf, naturally, is for luck. But the clovers are also a valuable survival food, as they are high in protein, widespread, and abundant. Dried flowerheads and seedpods can also be ground up into a nutritious flour and mixed with other foods and are also steeped in hot water for a healthy, tasty tea.

Most of you may find this very drastic but I'm telling you that this is indeed effective. I know it's quite worrying to imagine exposing your favorite flower to heat like that of steam, but I assure you that it's very safe for as long as you follow the procedure. First, you need to clean two buckets using some bleach solution. Then boil some water in a large stainless kettle and fill bucket 1 with two inches of the boiled water. On the other hand, fill bucket 2 with four inches of cool water.
Next thing you need to do is cut a half an inch or so from the stems of your flowers or foliage and put them in the hot water not longer than 20 seconds, then take them out and put them in the cool water. Then you must add two teaspoons of household bleach and a pinch of citric acid to each bucket to inhibit any further bacterial growth. The steaming induces a rush of natural sugars to the flower heads and gets the stems "drinking", and the process is very beneficial to flowers that may have been out of water for a length of time.

Sweet cherries usually grow around 30 feet in height. It boasts of leaves that are deep green in color and have a serrated pattern. The luscious green color is complemented by its rusty brown bark. The flowers, themselves, are attractive too. Usually, the flowers come in color white. This is the reason why most cherry plants are used for house designs or decorations.
Cultivating cherries is not that hard to do. However, you must keep in mind that several of these plants do not pollinate one another. On the other hand, the sour cherries have the capability to pollinate themselves. The sweet cherries are planted shallowly in the ground. Also, take care that you monitor your cherries' growth since this variety of cherry is usually prone to diseases and pests. A tip that you may want to execute is to plant some mulberry plants beside your cherry plants. This is because birds prefer the former as compared to cherries. In this way, the attention of the birds hovering at your garden will be directed towards the mulberries, instead of the cherry plants. Another thing that you may want to try is to place "Montmorency" sour cherries beside your sweet cherries. Why? This is because the said sour cherry can help in the pollination of your sweet cherries.

For most suburbian households the lawn reflects the kind of people that lives in the house. Taking care of the lawn has been synonymous with being a good neighbor. Most floral enthusiasts place their most beautiful flowers in their lawn for the whole neigborhood to see. Here are some basic tips in maintaining your lawn.
The early morning is the best time to water your lawn. Water thoroughly every two to three days during the peak growing season. You must apply extra water to light soils, slopes, and areas near buildings or sidewalks. Gauge the amount of water you are using on your yard with a pie pan or small can in your lawn to collect and measure water. Check that your lawn mower blade is sharp enough for an even cut. Mow every five days under normal conditions and only when grass is dry because wet grass causes clumping.
Know which type of fertilizer to use for a specific type of lawn. Granular Fertilizers are best for a year-round, systematic lawn treatment while Water Soluble Fertilizers are best for spot treatments on smaller areas. Choose either a rotary-type spreader or drop-type spreader to apply granular fertilizer evenly and a rotary spreader for large areas that need wide disbursement of fertilizer. An effective insect repellent is very important to rid your lawn of damaging grubs and mole crickets all season long.

If you want to put up your own beautiful flower garden, here are some basic rules that you need to follow. First is to improve your soil by increasing humus levels. Using SoilSyrup is ideal for flower gardening in containers and use it every time you water, year in and year out to keep your soil healthy and productive. Next is to choose the right plant for the right place. Consider the conditions of light, soil, and moisture where flowers can easily thrive. Through this you will do a lot less gardening work.
Plan before you jump right into gardening. This entails patience, commitment, and perseverance. Ask yourself how much time do you want to spend flower gardening, what are your growing conditions, what colors do you want in your flower garden, is fragrance important in your flower garden, and do you want a flower garden that looks good all growing season.
Flower gardening requires the right tools, not only your trowels, shovels, and hoes, but also fertilizer, soil amendments and watering aids. These will make gardening a lot easier and enjoyable. You can start your flower garden with either live plants or from seeds. Live plants need to be well-watered before planting. All plants must be watered according to their specific needs. It is best to water early in the day to prevent evaporation and leaf-burn.

Do not be enthralled by the beauty of this flower. It is considered one of the most poisonous flower which can be fatal to animals and humans. Even a small ingested amount can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, cardiac abnormalities, and death (may be sudden).
The Oleander ( Nerium oleander), is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. They are native to a broad area from Morocco and Portugal eastward through the Mediterranean region and southern Asia to Yunnan in southern China. It typically occurs around dry stream beds and grows to up to 2-6 m tall, with spreading to erect branches. The flowers come in white, pink or yellow, and are often, but not always, sweetly scented.
Although they are used for ornamental purposes in landscapes, parks, and along roadsides, oleanders are kept from public contact because of its high toxicity. It contains cardiac glycocides in all of its part which has lethal effects on the heart. Remember to be able to identify oleander and exercise extreme caution when pets (and humans) are in the vicinity of these plants. The plants should never be placed where animals can have contact with them, and extra care needs to be taken in cases where leaves can fall into a pasture or in the vicinity of a confined, bored or hungry animal.

My former neighbor grows this kind of flower. Before she left, she was kind enough to give me a magnolia flower on a pot, which I have in my bedroom window up to now. She gave me one flower because she said magnolias may not bloom for many years after planting if grown from seed. She was passing to me the luck.
Magnolias ( Magnolia species) are native to the Southern landscape. Of the 80 magnolia species, some are native to the United States, others are native to Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and Asia. Some are trees and others are tall shrubs, and others may be deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen. Magnolias may bloom in early spring before leaves develop, or they may flower in summer when in full foliage.
Most magnolias are valued as ornaments for their showy, fragrant flowers, large glossy leaves and striking fruit. The flowers may be white, pink or purple and may be small (3-inch diameter), with thin, strap-shaped petals (star magnolia), or large (12-inch diameter), with wide petals (Southern magnolia). White magnolias are used as herbal medicinal cure for clogged sinus and nasal passages. By mixing with other herbs, such as angelica, mint, and chrysanthemum, it is often recommended for upper respiratory tract infections and sinus headaches, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been scientifically confirmed.

I visited my aunt's house a few months ago and she had this peach flower on top of her old coffee table. I thought it was synthetic, but she told me it was a real hyacinth. I have only heard of the said flower but I vaguely had an idea how a hyacinth actually looks. Well now let me share to you what I have just learned.
The flower got its name from a handsome young man who in Greek mythology named Hyakinthos, who was loved by the sun god Apollo. One day Hyakinthos was practicing discus throw but the jealous god of the West Wind, who was also in love with Hyakinthos, blew the discus back and it fatally wounded him, and from his blood grew a flower which the god Apollo named after him.
Hyacinths are native to the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. Variations of hyacinth come in several colors namely white, pink, peach and blue. Other unusual colors to look for include dark wine purples , rosy reds, navy, egg-yolk yellows and soft oranges. Known species of hyacinth are the pure white "Carnegie", salmon "Anna Marie", delicate pink " Splendid Cornelia" and baby blue "Delft Blue.

Although popular in some cultures, the use of cannabis in the form of narcotics is illegal in many countries. The origin of this flowering plant is traced in the northern part of the Indian Himalayas. Cannabis is more popularly known as hemp, which is the term used to refer the cultivated cannabis for non-drug purposes. In drug form, cannabis is prepared in different ways. First, the flowers are dried and smoked; this is called marijuana. Another is in the form of resin, which is called hashish.
Cannabis have been used since ancient times, especially popular among the early Hindus. In Sanskrit, it was known as "ganjika" and in the modern language of India it is called "ganja." The use of cannabis as a drug may have been mentioned in India's religious literature - the Vedas. Though some identify the drug the same with other species of mushrooms and plants. The shamans of the Thracians and Scythians also used cannabis; they burned the flowers to induce trance. Rastafarian movement is widely known to use cannabis for spiritual purposes as well.
Aside from spiritual purposes, cannabis has also medicinal values. It is use primarily to boost appetite and as a pain reliever for serious illnesses such as AIDS and cancer. It has also proven to be an effective reliever of nausea for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the scene on L. Frank Baum's "Wizard of Oz" where the four travelers, well five if you count Toto, entered a field of flowers and feel in a deep slumber. The part where Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and Toto feel asleep in the field of poppies is one of the most memorable scenes in the story for me. Although it's very unrealistic that a field of poppies will induce deep sleep, this is somewhat true in a lesser degree because of the narcotic drug opium which comes from this flower.
There are different species of poppies. Some are annual, some are perennial, while others are biennial. Poppies are common in the northern part of the globe and they are used for decorations, for food, and for opium. In Canada, poppies are worn in commemoration of the soldiers who passed away. This showy flower is also used by bees as source of pollen.
According to a popular myth, ingesting a food that contains the seed of poppies will let an individual fail a drug test. The myth may have been derived from the fact that the narcotic opium is produced from the flower's seed pods. This belief was tested, and confirmed to be true, in the television program "MythBuster."

I can name three things that I am most passionate about. The first is eating, reading, and of course, gardening. It seems to me that I can't quite get enough of those three relaxing activites. You can just imagine when my sister-in-law invited me at their place and presented me a huge banana split and a gardening book as a present.
The book is entitled Perennial's All Season. The book was written by Douglas Green. I had quite a great conversation with our dear Annie (my sister-in-law). Afterwards, I went home to have a good read.
I wasn't mistaken. Perennials All Season taught me really neat tricks. It is fun to read, very easy to understand, and has great special features. The features include a selection of cultivation tips concerning plants which are arranged according to the season that they blossom. There are lots of colorful plants that are included in the book. The photos are amazing and not to mention the fact that the details are excellent. There are even garden settings to that are just so gorgeous to look at. I am actually thinking of copying one or two settings that are included in the said book.

My cat loves rubbing himself in his alfalfa shrub thingy. I don't know why he loves the plant, but I buy him the plant every month over at Whole Foods. I, on the other hand, love alfalfa in my gourmet sandwiches. It's healthy, it's kinda crunchy, and it actually tastes good.
The alfalfa is also very good to preventing and treating kidney stones. It's also a good herbal plant medicine for water retention and swellings. It's really very healthy and it contains a high amount of amino acids. If you have the dreaded diabetes disease, then the alfalfa is just perfect for you. It is also one very good herb for asthma attacks, arthritis, and many more.
The alfalfa plant usually grows starting from the month of July until the month of September. You'll actually see it growing around in most places, as long as there's a pleasant weather, then you'll see the alfalfa sprouting everywhere. It can grow until three feet in height and it has lovely purplish flowers. Man, this plant is just amazing. If only I can use it to get some hot chicks...

The Mentha Piperita also known as the Peppermint plant which grows mostly during the spring grows up to 2-3 feet tall. It produces flowering spikes which makes it a favorite landscaping plant. Besides the beauty that it extols the peppermint plant also has medicinal and culinary uses. But before I go to that let me first familiarize you with the plant's descriptions.
This plant is a perennial that has a hard stalk and a moss green-colored leaves. The lilac-colored flowers bloom during the summer until around late July, they however become dormant during the winter months so it is better to grow them in green houses during this period. The peppermint plant is known for releasing a soothing aroma of peppermint, a characteristic odor of most peppermint plant varieties. This is due to a volatile oil existing in all the parts of the plant.
The peppermint is a beneficial plant that proves its use in medicinal and culinary purposes. The oil extracted from peppermint has a potent anti-spasmodic action that can abate pains especially in the alimentary canal area. Peppermint tea is a very good soother for the stomach. On the other hand, the distinct flavor of the peppermint makes it a good flavoring agent that can be added to beverages and the dry leaves can be a welcoming taste in hot teas. Likewise, peppermint can also give a new twist to new potatoes and fruit salads. It can also be used to add aromatic flavor to sauces for certain dishes.
