Summer is the perfect time to watch your flowers bloom into perfection. As a matter of fact, gardeners around the world enjoy planting certain types of annuals and perennials that can make any summer garden a paradise on earth. If you're planning to start your own summer garden, here are some of the flower types you should include:
Annual flowers for your summer garden
One key in maintaining a beautiful garden throughout the summer is to choose flowers that can withstand the summer heat day in and day out. Some of these annual flowers that thrive in the summer include sunflowers, marigolds, and cosmos. You can also include million bells, perillas, and angelonias.
Perennials for your summer garden
Aside from annuals, you can also take your pick from perennials that love the sun. These include daylilies, purple coneflowers, and cranesbills. Because perennials can thrive for 3 or more seasons, they are perfect additions in your garden if you prefer flowers that don't need to be replanted every spring.
Whatever flower or plant types you choose for your summer garden, make sure they can withstand the summer heat. To keep your garden looking fresh, make sure to water them when needed, especially those newly planted plants and flowers. When dealing with both annual and perennial flowers, make sure to equip your garden with the right kind of soil and gardening tools. Aside from flowers, you can also decorate your summer garden with heat-resistant tropical plants and vines. Summer-loving vines include cardinal vines, morning glory, and black-eyed susies.

Having a blooming garden in the summer is indeed a wonderful addition to your home. It makes your humble abode look more inviting and cozy. Plus, a beautiful garden is the perfect location for a summer picnic or a family get-together. If you're planning on starting a summer flower garden, read on for tips.
Flowers that are best for summer gardens
Some of the colorful blooms that are perfect for summer gardens include roses, irises, and peonies. When planning to plant roses, keep in mind that they need at least six hours of sunlight every day. The perfect soil for roses is well-drained but can hold enough moisture. Roses also prefer soil enriched with lots of compost and manure. As for irises, they thrive in well-drained soil. They also need six hours of sunlight every day. Peonies are known for their voluptous shapes and strong fragrance. To successfully grow peonies, you need to have well-drained soils and sunny flowerbeds.
Tips for starting a summer flower garden
Even before summer begins, it's best to plant some of the flowers as early as possible. During the summer, make sure to water your plants as needed. Newly planted flowers need lots of water especially during their first months. If you have roses in your garden, watch out for signs of black spot disease, which is caused by a type of fungus. To prevent this, spray your roses with a homemade solution of 2 liters of water, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and a few drops of dishwasher soap.
Starting and maintaining a summer garden can get challenging, but the rewards are worth all the efforts. With enough determination, hard work, and little bit of elbow grease, you'll be able to see your flowers bloom just in time for summer.

I don't know how else to get rid of the bugs that ravage my garden plants except by using screens or taking very good care of the terrariums. Trouble is, I don't have the time to wipe them clean or address the moss building around the flower-cages. I don't like the sight of this greenish gunk creeping up my azaleas at all. Nor the spider webs filling up the crevices of the garden screen, blocking the warm July sunlight that help in the growth of my geraniums. Somebody actually suggested I buy pitcher plants at Lowes.
Saturday, May 5. 2007
My first glimpse of the X Judith Hindle freaked me out. If this is the plant that will devour the bugs in my garden (I hope the rodents, too), then I'd be happy to keep it at a price. I heard it was difficult to buy these plants outside of Lowes stores. I had chums who purchased Venus' flytraps and Cobra lilies to adorn their gardens and at the same time keep them clean from insects. No, but someone suggested if I didn't like the Scarlet Belle or the X Judith Hindle at Lowes, I can check out some cheap hybrids at Walmart.

But these plants take a beating in the cold weather. If you look at a regular pitcher plant, you may find a lot of bugs trapped inside, and an occasional spider or two, but none of them may be dead. The only insects that it seems to kill are the crickets and the bigger insects. It's great in my bog garden but I won't dream of watering it with tap water or putting on some Miracle-Gro. This plant doesn't care for fertilizer for the simple reason that it already gets its supply of nitrogen from the bugs it feeds on.

Pansy Violet, or simply Pansy, is a cultivated garden flower. Despite its name, there are also Pansies which are non-violet. Those are the species that have been bred. Their colors range from gold, orange, purple, violet, and a blue so deep as to be almost black. Pansies are quite a hardy plant and they grow well in sunny or partially sunny places. They are technically biennials, producing greenery on its first year, then flowers and seeds on its second, before they eventually die.
These plants can tolerate light freezes or a little snow, however, not for very long time. They bloom during the winter and are being planted in low areas with warmer climates. In these areas, they are known to reseed, assuring that they will again bloom the following year. These flowers are not known to be very heat-tolerant. If the temperature gets over a certain level, these plants become leggy and the blooming stops. Now I know why my Mom always ask me to water them thoroughly once a week. Today, our garden has a lot of Pansy Violet species. There are orange, gold, and blue that make our garden even more colorful. Its just so relaxing to look at them while eating my favorite dessert like Sweet Baked Alaska.

Japanese maple is a species in maple that can be found in countries like Japan, Korea and China. It is just a small tree ranging from 5-12 meters and commonly grows as an understory plant. Its leaves are opposite that range from 5-12 long and wide, palmately lobed with five or seven acutely pointed lobes. Its flowers are produced in small cymes and its fruit is a pair of winged samaras with each samara's length ranging from 2-3 cm with a 6-8 mm seed.
Japanese maple has been cultivated in Japan and other areas with thousands of cultivars selected for differences in size, for leaf shape and size, leaf color, bark color and texture, and growing pattern. Like other maple species, this plant can adapt to different conditions, but it is mostly suited in deep and fertile soils. As an understory tree, it can tolerate fairly dense sunlight although there is a disadvantage for that. There are cases wherein Japanese maple seedlings become a nuisance and the tree becomes invasive in woodlands. This plant is also commonly used in bonsai. So if you are looking for a bonsai, then Japanese maple can be the one that you are looking for.

When I was young, I used to ask my Mom this question, "What is that plant with red clusters of flowers?" Then she would immediately answer "that's Ixora." According to her, this plant is a typical ornamental in the tropical areas. It is too tender to survive outside of the tropics and subtropics. This plant also comes in an array of colors and species. There are yellow, pink, orange and others. She even mentioned that Ixora grows more of an ornamental however its flowers have medicinal value.
Ixora is a fairly small, bushy shrub, and usually grows from 5-10 feet. There are also dwarf varieties of Ixora that are much smaller. Flowers can develop even if the plant is only a few inches high. Usually, it is used as a hedge or small garden plant. This ornamental plant also prefers a warm, humid climate with temperatures rarely dipping below 60F. These plants even grow in shade or full sun. It can be propagated through its seeds and by cuttings.
Until now, our garden has hedges of Ixora but now, we have different colors already. We have pink, yellow and orange Ixoras. Definitely, the beauty and innocence of these flowers add up to the pleasing ambience of my Mother's garden.

Pests are a major nuisance in many gardens as they destroy your flower bed or a good crop of vegetables. In getting rid of those annoying and destructive pests, most garden owners avoid the use of harsh chemicals that have bad effects not only on the plants (especially in vegetable gardens) but also to humans and house pets. You can opt to observe gentler pest control methods.
Picking grubs off by hand, creating barriers and traps, and plugging holes can be time consuming for most people but are the most natural method. Other garden owners get rid of pests by inviting insects in that eat them. Predatory insects such as dragonflies and green lacewings eat aphids and other pests that attack your plants. A shallow bowl of water in the garden will attract dragonflies. You can also mix up solutions that can serve as pest control that are very safe. You can mix 1 tablespoon of liquid soap and 1 cup vegetable oil, dilute a teaspoon of this solution in a cup of water and spray on aphids and mites. But if you must use chemical pest controls you must use the least-toxic, like horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils and dehydrating dusts.

The no-dig gardening was originally developed both as a labor saving idea, and as a means to rejuvenate badly depleted soil in a vegetable garden. It involves starting with layers of newspaper, and by adding lucerne hay, straw, and compost in succeeding layers, you can make a growing medium without resorting to heavy digging, and one that is rich in nutrients and which will simplify weeding and encourage your much desired plants to grow. You must add manure, compost, etc. for maintenance, and the garden should not be dug up as this will undo the good work.
No-dig gardening method has done many good things for my vegetable gardens. I don't have to spend as much cultivation to the soil, because excessive cultivation of the soil, especially when very wet or very dry. This will damage the structure of the soil and lead to compaction. Also, excessive cultivation can discourage the earthworms, and they are the best free labor a gardener has. Personally I suggest doing an initial cultivation of the soil before you apply the no-dig system. It will guarantee a better environment for the worms, and thus a better garden for growing your plants, over the longer term.

Healthy plants depend on the good quality of the soil and nutrient organic matter that makes the soil more fertile and workable. Organic matter may come from decayed remains of once living material, plant residues and animal manures, known as humus, or finely ground rock particles rich in minerals. Organic materials provide food for soil micro organisms, which convert essential nutrients bound up in organic matter into water soluble forms that plant roots can readily take up and use for healthy growth.
Composts improve soil structure as in a sandy soil, the water and nutrient-holding capacities can be increased by adding organic matter. Heavy clay soil becomes more workable with the use of compost. Good compost which can be made from leaves, vegetable peelings, garden wastes or grass clippings can supply plant nutrients. Although healthy soild naturally have plant nutrients, some soils may be low or lacking in one nutrient or more. Good disease-free organic matter will give the right amounts of nutrients available for most ornamental plants. Organic fertilizers are much better since nutrients in synthetic fertilizers are so concentrated that over time they create chemical imbalances in the soil that reduce the all-important microbial and earthworm activity.

Gardening is literally a hands-on past time. Your hands are the most frequently used tool in digging, dividing, weeding, and spreading mulch. Sometimes you work better with your bare hands than with those gardening tools. But despite that, you need to take care of your precious hands by always wearing protective gloves. You have a lot of glove types to choose from. There are the cotton gloves which are cheap and abundant, but wear quickly, weigh a ton when wet, and won't protect you against thorns and prickers.
There are gloves that are made of spandex/lycra composites. They fit very well as they have one-size-fits-all and come in style and colors. It has no absorption, wicks moisture away, and the hard wearing nylon on palms and fingers makes it very durable. If you are worried about wetness, rubber coated gloves shed water like the proverbial duck’s back. To keep your hands dry while mixing chemicals, you can use nitrile disposable gloves. Gauntlets that extend up to your elbows will protect you even the the sharpest and very pointed thorns. There is also a new spray-on gloves which have a silicon spray that seals those hands from the grime (and oils from things like poison ivy) as gloves for those that don't like gloves.

People with allergies are advised to take short – and long-term precautions to control allergy symptoms as they start to work on their lawns and gardens. There are over 35 million people in the United States affected by seasonal allergic rhinitis or " hay fever." It is caused by substances called allergens, airborne pollens and mold spores that commonly trigger symptoms during the spring, summer and fall. During these times, people with such allergy experience symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, and itchy eyes, roof of the mouth, throat, nose, and ears.
To play it safe, avoid large areas of turf and use natural plants. Native plants are best for people with allergies because they require little effort, withstand the extreme climate changes in various regions of the country and do not need fertilizers, water or pesticides. Every plants produce a unique level of pollen, therefore producing different levels of allergic reactions. Plants that cause allergies usually have flowers that are small and insignificant looking and have no color or attracting nectar, and they are usually wind pollinated and produce great amounts of pollen that is buoyant and without much surface ornamentation. Plants with bright, showy flowers seldom have airborne pollen which are large and pollinated by insects, so they are best for allergic people.

Most of you may find this very drastic but I'm telling you that this is indeed effective. I know it's quite worrying to imagine exposing your favorite flower to heat like that of steam, but I assure you that it's very safe for as long as you follow the procedure. First, you need to clean two buckets using some bleach solution. Then boil some water in a large stainless kettle and fill bucket 1 with two inches of the boiled water. On the other hand, fill bucket 2 with four inches of cool water.
Next thing you need to do is cut a half an inch or so from the stems of your flowers or foliage and put them in the hot water not longer than 20 seconds, then take them out and put them in the cool water. Then you must add two teaspoons of household bleach and a pinch of citric acid to each bucket to inhibit any further bacterial growth. The steaming induces a rush of natural sugars to the flower heads and gets the stems "drinking", and the process is very beneficial to flowers that may have been out of water for a length of time.

Sweet cherries usually grow around 30 feet in height. It boasts of leaves that are deep green in color and have a serrated pattern. The luscious green color is complemented by its rusty brown bark. The flowers, themselves, are attractive too. Usually, the flowers come in color white. This is the reason why most cherry plants are used for house designs or decorations.
Cultivating cherries is not that hard to do. However, you must keep in mind that several of these plants do not pollinate one another. On the other hand, the sour cherries have the capability to pollinate themselves. The sweet cherries are planted shallowly in the ground. Also, take care that you monitor your cherries' growth since this variety of cherry is usually prone to diseases and pests. A tip that you may want to execute is to plant some mulberry plants beside your cherry plants. This is because birds prefer the former as compared to cherries. In this way, the attention of the birds hovering at your garden will be directed towards the mulberries, instead of the cherry plants. Another thing that you may want to try is to place "Montmorency" sour cherries beside your sweet cherries. Why? This is because the said sour cherry can help in the pollination of your sweet cherries.

For most suburbian households the lawn reflects the kind of people that lives in the house. Taking care of the lawn has been synonymous with being a good neighbor. Most floral enthusiasts place their most beautiful flowers in their lawn for the whole neigborhood to see. Here are some basic tips in maintaining your lawn.
The early morning is the best time to water your lawn. Water thoroughly every two to three days during the peak growing season. You must apply extra water to light soils, slopes, and areas near buildings or sidewalks. Gauge the amount of water you are using on your yard with a pie pan or small can in your lawn to collect and measure water. Check that your lawn mower blade is sharp enough for an even cut. Mow every five days under normal conditions and only when grass is dry because wet grass causes clumping.
Know which type of fertilizer to use for a specific type of lawn. Granular Fertilizers are best for a year-round, systematic lawn treatment while Water Soluble Fertilizers are best for spot treatments on smaller areas. Choose either a rotary-type spreader or drop-type spreader to apply granular fertilizer evenly and a rotary spreader for large areas that need wide disbursement of fertilizer. An effective insect repellent is very important to rid your lawn of damaging grubs and mole crickets all season long.

If you want to put up your own beautiful flower garden, here are some basic rules that you need to follow. First is to improve your soil by increasing humus levels. Using SoilSyrup is ideal for flower gardening in containers and use it every time you water, year in and year out to keep your soil healthy and productive. Next is to choose the right plant for the right place. Consider the conditions of light, soil, and moisture where flowers can easily thrive. Through this you will do a lot less gardening work.
Plan before you jump right into gardening. This entails patience, commitment, and perseverance. Ask yourself how much time do you want to spend flower gardening, what are your growing conditions, what colors do you want in your flower garden, is fragrance important in your flower garden, and do you want a flower garden that looks good all growing season.
Flower gardening requires the right tools, not only your trowels, shovels, and hoes, but also fertilizer, soil amendments and watering aids. These will make gardening a lot easier and enjoyable. You can start your flower garden with either live plants or from seeds. Live plants need to be well-watered before planting. All plants must be watered according to their specific needs. It is best to water early in the day to prevent evaporation and leaf-burn.

I can name three things that I am most passionate about. The first is eating, reading, and of course, gardening. It seems to me that I can't quite get enough of those three relaxing activites. You can just imagine when my sister-in-law invited me at their place and presented me a huge banana split and a gardening book as a present.
The book is entitled Perennial's All Season. The book was written by Douglas Green. I had quite a great conversation with our dear Annie (my sister-in-law). Afterwards, I went home to have a good read.
I wasn't mistaken. Perennials All Season taught me really neat tricks. It is fun to read, very easy to understand, and has great special features. The features include a selection of cultivation tips concerning plants which are arranged according to the season that they blossom. There are lots of colorful plants that are included in the book. The photos are amazing and not to mention the fact that the details are excellent. There are even garden settings to that are just so gorgeous to look at. I am actually thinking of copying one or two settings that are included in the said book.

Flowers are subject of creative pursuits such as painting and artistic digital photography. The wide array of flower varieties creates an almost limitless panorama of creative ideas using flowers as subjects. Flowers are not only symbols of affection or romantic love. Most people believe that beauty in nature, as typified by flowers, is the best evidence of the existence of a divine creator.
It is somehow a mystery why some flowers only bloom in a certain time of the year while some flowers bloom all throughout the year. Mantthiola incana, commonly known as stock, is a type of flower that blooms only once a year. This flower is valued for its sweet fragrance. It is one of the most sweetly scented flowers. To cultivate this flower, you will need seedlings with no signs of disease or wilting.
You should choose seedlings without flowers so that the energy will be concentrated on root development. You can plant the seedlings during spring or in autumn as long as the environmental temperature does not drop to below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Seedlings should be planted with seven to twelve inches distance from each other.

Flowers have been essential parts of the many aspects of human activities. For instance, flowers are used in the courtship ritual. Although flowers are used as ornaments for aesthetic purposes, some species of flowers are used in food recipes as well as in medicinal concoctions.
The dahlia flower, for instance, was once used by ancient South American civilizations, particularly the Aztecs, in the treatment of epilepsy. The most interesting flowers to cultivate are the flowers that can offer a wide range of possible breeds. Passifloraceae, commonly called passion flowers, is a family of flowering plants that is relatively easy to cultivate.
This plant family has 530 species classified under 18 genera. They have medicinal value particularly for treating hysteria and nervous tachycardia. These passion flowers ideally grow in exceptionally drained soil such as mountain slopes and roadside rubble in arid areas. You may improve germination of the seeds of these flowers by lightly rubbing sandpaper on one or both sides of the seeds. Soak the seeds in tepid water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in 2-5 mm deep of soil-based compost. Maintain the temperature at 20 degrees Celcius.

Not all of us have green thumbs. Most of us, no matter how hard we try, end up with withered or wilted plants. Plants seem to recognize persons who are truly ecologically aware. No, I am not talking about the Taoist or Buddhist ideal about being one with the universe.
A person who is ecologically aware looks at plants not as mere ornaments used as gifts in romantic dates or part of creative interior designs. An ecologically aware person looks at plants as having important roles in the ecological balance and evolution of species. Flowering plants, in particular, have special influence in the evolutionary development of social insects such as the bees.
Plants need three basic resources to survive. First is sunlight, which is very important in the process of photosynthesis. The energy from the ultraviolet rays of sunlight serves as catalyst for the chlorophyll to process nutrients into food. Hence, plants should be placed in areas where they can get ample sunlight. The second resource is carbon dioxide, which is necessary in the manufacture of sugar and carbohydrates. The third important resource is water, which carries the nutrients to plants and maintains structural integrity.

Mowing the lawn is one of the major causes of arguments between husbands and wives, next to taking out the trash. Again, compromise is the key to solve this problem.
The lawn is the first thing people notice when they see your house. A nice lawn may somehow indicate that the family knows how to groom their house and themselves. A nicely cut grass in the yard is very inviting. It can be a place for the family to relax and spend the afternoon on warm summer night and cold autumn ones. During winter, lawn mowing is not a problem.
The key in maintaining a nice looking lawn is to water it regularly. Be sure to have sprinklers so the grass will look fresh and healthy.
Lawn-mowing would be the problem. Hire a high-school kid to do this for you or give yourself a little exercise and do it by yourself. Just keep in mind that you will not only be pleasing your lovely wife but you will also be pleasing yourself with the clean look of your front lawn. The neighbors will also admire your clean lawn and you will be able to invite more friends for some simple front yard party.

If you're living in a confined space, but you still want a garden, well there's a solution for that. You can just plant flowers on a container garden. Container gardens are basically compact gardens that you can put anywhere around the house. Of course, there should still be sun exposure for the flowers to bloom beautifully.
Planting on container gardens is just like planting on a yard soil. The only difference is that you have limited space for your flower selections. You have to carefully choose the flowers that you want to grow. You should also choose flowers that don't grow too tall or too big, or else, they would be cramped in your container garden. A good idea for the container garden is to plant it with spilling flowers. That way, it's would look like a flower bouquet. You can also plant elongated stem-flowers for a clean and simple effect in your house. You can also blend and mix up the flowers for a blended house interior color.
Some people make use of their ceramic tile pots. This is also a good container for your small flower garden. You just have to remember that you must only plant flowers with small roots and stems, so that they won't burst out of the ceramic pot when they grow. Container gardens are easy to maintain if you just put in the right amount of fertilizer. You shouldn't forget to water your garden, but don't overdo it as it can drown the flowers. Lastly, just buy quality containers that wouldn't easily break.

When I'm planting flowers, I would want them to grow and bloom immediately. It's just a lovely sight to see the seeds you've planted grow into beautiful, colorful, and vibrant flowers. The best way to have colors in your gardens automatically is to plant annual flowers. Annual flowers are easier to grow and maintain than perennial flowers. Some nice annual flowers are zinnias, petunias, marigolds, and asters.
Now, how can you get those annual colorful flowers to bloom in no time? In your garden, you have to find a nice spot with a good proper sun exposure, at least for five hours in a day. Dig and pulverize the soil eight inches deep. Then, plant in a row position according to the size of the seeds. That way, the seeds would grow faster. You have to put spaces in between the seeds so that they wouldn't be cramped under the soil when they begin to grow. But, before anything else, you must water the rows first. This would make it easier to plant your seeds. In addition to this, you should also shade the rows with a newspaper, any grass clippings, or a burlap. When your seeds begin to spurt its first green stem, you can already remove your shade. After a short period of time, you'll see your wonderful, colorful, and lovely flowers bloom in your yards. These flowers are instant house designs, to make the drab into fab!

Winter can, for gardeners at least, be considered an off-season where the best thing to do is to just wait out the snow and prepare for spring. Often, this is the time when many gardeners put their tools in storage.
But before you put away that hoe, or lock up that rake, it's a good idea to follow a few garden tips in order to make sure you'll be ready for the thaw:
Hand tools like shovels and rakes should have their metal parts oiled and their wooden parts sanded and lightly oiled to preserve them for the coming winter months.
Power tools need special care before storage, and it's best to consult with a mechanic or other professional before locking them up for the winter.
